California has at least 23 different types of termites. Out in the woods, termites munch on decaying wood from fallen trees or stumps. But once they make it to your home, they'll munch right through your walls, floorboards, and furniture instead. The University of California (UC) says the three types of termites found most frequently in the state are Drywood Termites, which are likely to attack your furniture; Subterranean Termites, which come through the soil and chew right through the floorboards into your building; and Dampwood Termites, which flock toward saturated wood near water leaks, and make you regret not taking that dripping line more seriously.

Termites may be small creatures, but their impact nationwide is massive. The California Pest Control Board says wood-destroying insects cost home and business owners in the United States upwards of 5 billion dollars a year, one billion of which comes from California and Hawaii alone. Ninety-five percent of that damage is carried out by termites.
